How do microplastics affect human cells?

It is not an isolated fact that microplastics have polluted the planet and that, currently, the disuse of these elements is gaining more importance, since they are an extremely harmful component for all beings and ecosystems on the planet.

Recent research has shown that microplastics cause damage to human cells due to the small particles that we consume through food and that we inhale through the air. This damage includes cell death, allergic reactions, and damage to cell walls. In this study, comparisons were made between the level of microplastics that caused damage to cells and the levels consumed by people through water, shellfish and fish, as well as salt.

This research showed that we are continuously exposed to these toxic compounds, but it is not necessary to know the impact that these can have on the health of the human body, since it is unknown how long these elements last in the human body before being expelled by means of feces.

On the other hand, although the impact that these compounds may have on the body is unknown, plastic particles have been detected in the placentas of women, which could cause long-term damage or alter the immune system of the fetus, due to consumption or inhalation by the mother of these particles. In addition, scientists have also revealed that babies fed milk contained in plastic bottles can consume millions of particles a day, this being a cause for concern.
